European Academic/ Internship Semester I & II

    The European Academic/Internship Semester provides full linguistic and cultural immersion into the societies of French- or German-speaking countries through a combination of intensive language training, academic study and, whenever feasible, supervised working experience on location in Europe. Semester I is usually spent at a university. Semester II is spent at a university and/or a work placement (internship/traineeship) in a private company or public institution. Students will be placed individually or in very small groups at selected partner institutions of the European Studies Course/the Department of GIS. The course of study will normally comprise intensive foreign language tuition (French or German) and selected academic courses, as they are available at the respective partner institutions. In case of internships, students will be placed individually with the assistance of the programme co-ordinators. Internships may vary in length but shall not extend six months of duration. Internship placements are subject to availability of places, suitability of the student and approval by host companies.

    It is a strategy of applied learning and a structured programme developed and supervised by the University in collaboration with overseas sport and recreation agencies. The internship experience is a valuable element to nurture students' professionalism and a practice to prepare for their future career. Students are required to complete 250 hours in overseas sport and recreation agencies such as the Walt Disney World International Cultural Programme, USA Camp Site, Taiwan Outward Bound School etc.

    The Summer Sojourn Programme is a distinctive feature of the China Studies Programme in which all students are required to spend five weeks at Tsinghua University in Beijing at the end of the Third Year.     The Field Camp is conducted during the second semester of the second year. This 7-9 day excursion has a variety of taken students to locations outside Hong Kong and offers an invaluable learning experience. In addition to the field camp, local and regional fieldtrips are organized for many subjects offered by the Department. Experiences have shown that field camps and subject-related fieldwork activities encourage close interactions and friendly relationships between students and staff in a non-classroom setting. Apart from the pedagogical importance of fieldwork, it helps to strengthen student-staff relationships and interactions. Every student, including those in both the Major and the China Studies programmes, must fulfill the Field Camp requirement before they can graduate.
